'Cityscapes II'

In the exhibition CITYSCAPES II four artists show their perspectives on architecture and the impact it has in mostly urban environments.

The Plastic Number, an important mathematical constant in architecture, inspires Marleen van Wijngaarden and results in abstractions of urban sprawl with an almost musical rhythm. The meticulous pencil drawings of Alexandra Roozen have a hypnotic layered quality. The works have an inner and outer perspective, taking the viewer inside the work and at the same time remind the viewer of a bird’s-eye view of an ever-growing metropolis. The painting ‘Complexite’ from the series ‘Industrial Gardens’ of
Jake Messing shows his interest in the urban environment: its inherent birth and decay is the dominant inspiration for this series. Instead of providing a distinct conclusion, his work operates more as a catalyst for questions, discourse and ways of seeing. Although Pim Palsgraaf’s work is based on similar ideas and thoughts as Messing’s work, his views are slightly bleaker: he tries to capture the devastating influence urbanization has over nature.
